Some Scary Campervan Stories
However careful and sensible a campervan owner can be, there are some situations when even campervan insurance just isn’t enough…
Back to the Future (‘Sweded’ fan remake – check out the actor carrying the cardboard VW campervan!)
1) The Hills Have Eyes
Sadly, even campervan insurance can’t protect your family from radioactive homicidal mutants.
However, if you were the kind of person who shopped around carefully for their campervan insurance, you might well have followed your carefully planned route with your organised maps instead of taking an unmarked track to your doom on the word of an obvious deviant.
2) Stephen King’s Desperation
Another doomed family turns up in Desperation, Nevada, in an RV with stickers saying ‘Four Happy Campers’. All is not well in Desperation, in keeping with its name. Personally, I just really didn’t want those things that happened to happen to them. But considering that they did, unfortunately campervan insurance just wouldn’t have helped them. It might have paid out to their estate for their relatives, but I don’t remember Stephen King mentioning that.
3) Little Miss Sunshine
Another family, en route to a California beauty pageant, also experiences an eventful, though happier, journey.
Little Miss Sunshine: in many ways a classic roadtrip for bringing people together and discovery
From the start, the Little Miss Sunshine Campervan only works in third and fourth gear, breaks down and will only start on a hill or by being pushed at 15mph. It can’t fix a dysfunctional family or help little girls win beauty pageants with burlesque dance routines, but it adds a lot to the film’s charm. Some well chosen campervan insurance could have got them there in time and removed some of that charm.
4) VW Campervan Crisis
While the Little Miss Sunshine campervan eventually brings the family together, Nigel from Campervan Crisis is someone who probably sees a lot less of his family for a while (just guessing from the days when my own dad built a kit car!).
“As this highly rated Discovery TV series finds out – their owners will spend tens of thousands of pounds to restore and customise their Campervan
Nigel’s beloved Campervan is held together with rust and filler and he is too embarrassed to take it to a VW show. But Nigel has a dream – that one day his rusting hulk of metal will be tearing down the drag strip at Santa Pod. He has only 150 days and just £12,000 to achieve his dream. Can Nigel transform his embarrassing excuse for a Campervan into a VW showpiece to be proud of? Or will he suffer a Campervan Crisis?”
Could be an expensive one to cover…! Watch the Campervan Crisis promo video:
5) Escape to Witch Mountain
The original version of Escape to Witch Mountain was a 1970s showcase for the Disney in-house effects team, and included animated broomsticks and baseball bats, as well as a campervan that takes to the air and the appearance of a UFO.
Explain that to the mechanic when it’s MOT or Smog Check time. Plus, I imagine the ability to fly might take your campervan out of the list of types of recreational vehicles covered by campervan insurance.
6) ‘Back to the Future’: Campervan full of terrorists
Unfortunately, if you fill your campervan with machine gun wielding terrorists, you’ll probably find the resulting damage may not be covered by your insurance policy. Just something to take into consideration when planning your nights out and weekends away.
As you can see, given some potential situations, it may be difficult to find a policy to cover every possible need. However, if you’re asking yourself, ‘is campervan insurance worth it?,’ shop around, consider your real world circumstances, and there will be a policy that best matches your requirements and budget.
